Enrolment for election
Sir,—l write to your readers again on electoral enrolment for this year’s General Election. All eligible voters must enrol or reenrol by May 11 to be included on the ordinary roll in order to vote.
Recently the Minister of Justice informed me that more than half a million voters were not on the rolls. This is very disturbing. Many of these people cannot be contacted except through the media to ensure enrolment. In addition, there were only 22,000 new voters on the new rolls. This is far fewer than should be enrolled. I urge all eligible voters to get on the rolls by May 11, the closing date for enrolment. It is essential to be enrolled on the new
rolls in order to vote. This election cannot be fully democratic unless all those who are eligible to vote are able to do so. Enrolment is the first step towards a democratic election. — Yours, etc., DAVID LANGE, Leader of the Opposition. May 1, 1984.
