French social habits explored
In the final talk in bis series, “City Facilities — the French Solution” (Concert programme, 7 o’clock tonight), Dr Alan Clark, of the French department at the University of Canterbury, will look at some of the social consequences of recent technological developments and their impact on French social habits.
These developments include the unisex automated public lavatory (complete with pink-tinted lighting and piped music); the fast food phenomena of Burger King and “Asterix-burgers” vying with the traditional French cafe and bistro; and the explosion of high technology communications that will lead to further social segregation.
