Nuclear weapon-free zones
Sir, — How encouraging to see that Akaroa and Banks Peninsula have to become nuclear weapons free zones. Symbolic the gesture may be, but it is a symbol of hope in a sad and beleagured world. The desire for peace is the most pressing issue in today’s world and New Zealand can give a lead in impleinenting that desire. According to our Tourist Department tourists come here because we have a beautiful country a friendly people and are seen as a haven of peace free from riots and threats of war. If New Zealand as a whole were to
become a nuclear-free zone it would further help that vision to become a reality. — Yours, etc., JILL WILCOX. April 30, 1984.
