Man jailed for receiving cars

A sentence of five months imprisonment was imposed in the District Court yesterday on a Dunedin man, on three charges of receiving cars when he knew them to have been stolen, between March and June, last year.

The sentence is to be followed by a year’s probation.

David John McFadyen, aged 29, a drainlayer had been found guilty of the offences by a jury at his trial last month.

His counsel, Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon, submitted in mitigation of penalty, that medical and pyschiatric reports confirmed that McFadyen needed help. His suicide attempts were getting worse. Judge Fraser, imposing sentence, said McFadyen had many convictions, including offences of theft and receiving.

He said some account had to be given to McFadyen’s personal problems. On the other hand, he was a persistent offender and his latest offences involved three separate acts of deliberate dishonesty.
