Reward for hard study

One of the first two graduands of Massey University’s recently instituted diploma in police studies serves with the Christchurch police. Five years of hard study will culminate for SeniorSergeant Keith Knox when he graduates at Palmerston North on Friday. Senior-Sergeant Knox worked as an extra-mural student on 14 papers for the diploma. He was allowed study time each week as well as periodic study leave to work at Massey University. The only other police studies graduand in New Zealand is a policewoman from Wellington. Senior-Sergeant Knox said yesterday that he felt his police work had benefited as a result of his diploma studies. “It generally widens your horizons and teaches you what makes society and people tick,” he said. As part of the diploma course, students had to study a core of social science papers and three specific police papers. Aspects of policing studied included the theory of patrolling, handling dissidents, and corruption in the police, said Senior-Sergeant Knox. The course was run by Mr David Burns, a former American policeman and now the senior lecturer and director of police studies at Massey. Senior-Sergeant Knox, aged 42, has served with the police for 13 years, spending all that time in Christchurch.
