$2.1M to be granted to university
PA Wellington z The Government has approved a $2.1 million grant for extensions to Otago University’s marine science laboratory. Announcing the grant, the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, said that present facilities dated mainly from 1904 and were cramped and inadequate for research work, the laboratory’s main function. The laboratory was the main research facilitiy for the southern oceans and its improvement was strongly supported by the Ministry of Fisheries. “The seas south of New Zealand represent the major under-used fisheries resource in the world and because of this are of great interest from a research and commercial point of view,” Mr Wellington said.
