Charlie Dempsey’s whis-tle-stop visit to Singapore for the Olympic play-off series continued an amazing amount of travel he has clocked up in the 17 months he has been the president of the Oceania Soccer Confederation. Already this year he has

been to Australia twice. A few days after his return from Singapore he will be in Fiji for a referees and coaching course. Next month, he will fly to Zurich for the F.I.F.A. congress and the replay of the 1982 World Cup Final between Italy and West Germany as part of the Federation’s eightieth jubilee. He will then go on to Scotland and England to watch further internationals and have discussions on the proposed end of season tour by New Zealand. In September-October, Mr Dempsey expects to attend one of the many F.I.F.A. committee meetings in Chile and in December he will be back in Australia for the Oceania congress and youth tournament. Last year, Mr Dempsey, who retired from his main business commitments in September, 1982, but still retains other associated business interests, was in Taipei, Bangkok, Japan, Australia (twice), Papua New Guinea (twice), Western Samoa and Zurich. Yet, for all the travelling he has done, he cites a visit last year to the tiny North Island town of Eketahuna as the highlight.

“For me, that was the real success story,” said Mr Dempsey. "Before the World Cup, Eketahuna was a rugby domain. It had no soccer teams. Now it has two. for me, that is what soccer is all about.” y
