Few lives lost in ship sinkings

No great loss of life occurred in ship casualties in the second quarter of 1983 according to a report released by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. The society reported the loss of 51 ships, totalling 144,346 tons, for the period ending June. A total of 22 ships were lost to foundering, seven through fire or explosion, two through contact, 12 wrecked or abandoned and one vessel reported as “lost.” Panama lost 13 ships totalling 100,184 tons. Five were lost under the Greek flag, five under the United States flag and four under the Japanese flag, said Lloyds. The oldest ship to be lost during the quarter was the dry cargo vessel Tri State, a Hon-duran-registered ship of 148 tons, built in 1893. She was reported wrecked off Ambergris Bay, Belize. The casualty list also included vessels which had been broken up. Ship disposals from Liberia, Panama and Greece accounted for almost 43 per cent of the total tonnage of 3.7 million tons.

Fourteen steam tankers of over 100,060 tons were broken up during the quarter, the newst vessel being the Italian registered Ritina (125,302 tons), built in 1974. The classification society said tankers had accounted for almost 75 per cent of the total tonnage broken up. Of ths tonnage scrapped, about 57 per cent was broken up in Taiwan, 20 per cent in South Korea and 7 per cent in Pakistan. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 * a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica).
