‘Amazing’ delay on sunscreens

PA Auckland The Government’s move to drop the price of some sunscreen lotions, coming at the end of summer, is amazing, according to the Labour Party’s spokesman on health, Dr Michael Bassett.

“The Government has let another season go by when it had all the facts before Christmas,” said the member of Parliament for Te Atatu. Dr Bassett said he called for the price reduction last November. “I remember we had a first-class donnybrook about it in Parliament when Mr Malcolm (the Minister of Health) maintained it was impossible to detect which

sunscreens gave sufficient protection to qualify for a subsidy.”

Dr Malcolm has announced that some sunscreens will soon be available on prescription, or taxfree when sold across the counter.

He said he initially opposed such a move. Exposure to the sun could cause cancer, he said, but it was not generally because of sunbathing, but through prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, and because people did not wear enough protective clothing. Dr Bassett said deaths from skin cancer claimed more than 30 lives each year.
