Big capping ceremonies

More than 1000 students from the University of Canterbury will graduate today and tomorrow at two ceremonies at the Christchurch Town Hall. Graduands in arts, commerce, music and fine arts will be capped today from 2 p.m. Those graduating in science, engineering, law and forestry will be capped tomorrow at the same time. These graduands will march, in their gowns, from the old university site at the Arts Centre, through Cathedral Square to the ToWn Hall before the ceremony.

The information officer at the university, Mr Eric Beardsley, said that this year 70 per cent of all those students eligible to graduate were actually attending the ceremony. This was the highest proportion of graduands attending that anyone at the university could remember, he said. Many graduates will attend the graduation ball, being held at the student union building tomorrow evening. List for today’s ceremony, page 21.
