Road bill jumps to $63.5M

PA Dunedin The Clyde-Cromwell road would now cost about $63.5 million, an increase of $34.2 million over the 1981 committal estimate, said a Ministry of Works and Development engineer in Dunedin yesterday. The latest estimate was an increase of $13.5 million over the figure quoted by the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Friedlander, in October last year, according to the Ministry’s Alexandra resident engineer, Mr R. Carstens. The cost of the road had risen $17.8 million because of technical problems associated with the geology of the Cromwell gorge, and $16.4 million through inflation, Mr Carstens said. The total cost of stabilising a slip above the road on the Cromwell side of Gibraltar Rock was now estimated to be about $2.5 million, and this was included in the $63.5 million projection.
