Car workers return

About 200 car workers at the Toyota factory at Sockburn returned to work yesterday after striking last Friday in protest against the refusal of a car worker to join the Engineers’ Union. The workers met for about hours on Friday before voting by secret ballot to strike from about 1.30 p.m., then return to work yesterday for a seven-hour day. They also voted to work a seven-hour to-

day, before meeting again tomorrow to review their action. The Engineers’ Union and Toyota New Zealand, Ltd, are trying to find a way to solve the dispute. The man joined the company about five weeks ago but has not joined the union. Under the voluntary unionism law which came into effect on February 1, no-one is compelled to join a union.
