Air N.Z. served notice

PA Auckland The Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Union gave 14 days notice of industrial action yesterday over the re-assignment of four cabin crew to domestic flights. But Air New Zealand’s chief executive, Mr Norman Geary, said he would not rule on the dispute until the union withdrew its threats of strike and its vote of noconfidence in the cabin crew management. Mr Geary had been expected to rule on the reassignment yesterday. The dispute arose when the four said they were too tired to work an international flight. The union president, Mr Peter Best, said he would meet the union’s solicitor today. Meanwhile, the union had issued 14 days notice of unspecified industrial action. It would also hold a secret ballot within the 14 days.

“We have been forced into this,” said Mr Best. “We were hoping to have it resolved today. We have been acting legally all along and we do not have any other alternative.”
