Beatles statue arouses ire

NZPA-Reuter London The Beatles’ home city of Liverpool has unveiled a statue of the pop group which left onlookers puzzled and Beatles fans angry. “From close up I didn’t recognise any of them, not even my own brother, but I think you have to get away from it so that distance will lend perspective,” said Mike McCartney. Some fans at the unveiling were less polite. “A disgrace,” said one. “The only one I recognised was Ringo and that was because he was sitting down and holding a drum-

stick,” said another. The statue is meant to portray the Beatles in their early days. The sculptor, John Doubleday, was unrepentant, telling reporters, “I particularly did not want a clone likeness.” ■ Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and the late John Lennon began their career in the 1960 s from Liverpool’s now demolished Cavern Club. The $60,000 bronze statue is the focal point of a big development scheme featuring restaurants, shops, a tavern, and a reconstruction of the Cavern in its original underground site.
