Rise m world trade seen

NZPA-Reuter Geneva World trade increased 2 per cent in 1983, regaining its 1980 levels, and is set to' expand further this year, according to the directorgeneral of the world trade body, G.A.T.T. In an address to the Chicago World Trade Conference, Mr Arthur Dunkel said that if trade stabilised

at its present levels, 1984 would show a 4 to 5 per cent increase over 1983. “There is a good reason to expect better than that,” he said. The growth rate was much faster in the second half of 1983 and still seemed to be increasing, said Mr Dunkel, head of the Genevabased G.A.T.T. (General

Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). “Most forecasts suggest that economic growth in the industrialised world, and notably in Europe, will be substantially faster this year than last,” he said. Mr Dunkel said increased exports to the United States accounted for half of last year’s net growth in world, trade.
