Speed limit
Sir,—We are told that excessive speed is an important factor in the road toll. At present the speed limit on the open road is 80 km/h; but a large advertisement on page 12 of “The Press” last Saturday says that the new Castle Hill village is 96 kilometres from Christchurch and that it takes an hour to get there from Christchurch. The reader is encouraged to exceed the speed limit. To travel 96 kilometres at 80 km/h takes one hour 12 minutes — more if one allows slowing for built-up areas and for other road variations such as Porters Pass. Even at the old speed limit of 96 km/h the journey should, for the reasons mentioned above, take more than an hour. Is it right that an advertisement should encourage speeding? — Yours, etc., UNA DROMGOOLE. April 24, 1984.
