Japanese staff
Sir,—As a full-time Japanese language student and prospective job seeker, I was disappointed to read H. Tabak’s letter (April 18) on Japanese staff. I can only hope that his attitude toward employing Japanese-speaking New Zealanders is not typical of local employers in the tourist industry. The assertion that New Zealanders, in their own country, cannot successfully entertain and cater for foreign visitors, be they Japanese or any other nationality, is nonsense. Surely, no person is more qualified to speak on New Zealand’s history and way of life to Japanese tourists than a born-and-bred New Zealander who can speak their language. A rapidlygrowing number of people learning Japanese for employment must at least be given the chance by employers to prove their worth in the tourist field. — Yours, etc., J. H. ORAM. April 23, 1984.
