Wide gains in active market
Rises outnumbered falls almost three-to-one in a very active market when trading on the New Zealand Stock Exchange resumed after the Easter break yesterday. Large price movements among the 69 rises included a 55c gain by NZ Industrial Gases, 40c by Barclays NZ, 25c by Independent Newspapers, 17c by Brierley, and 20c by Brierley contributing shares. Fletcher Challenge was down 1c to 295 on the price of the largest parcel to change hands, but in other sales the price was above 300 c. There were no significant drops, a 15c movement by Repco 17pc notes being the only fall greater than sc. A total of 3,386,608 shares changed hands, at a cost of $4,070,839. The NZUC industrial index leaped 22.12 points to 1333.87, while the mining index slipped 0.74 points to 73.11.
