Wooden toys praised
PA Wellington An Otaki carpenter who made toys for his young son when he could not find any he could afford has won a Design Council Designmark award for his creations. Mr Murray Fulford, who first made the wooden toys six years ago when he was out of work after a spinal operation, now hopes that a manufacturer will test his designs. The Designmark seal of approval was given to 23 of Mr Fulford’s toys, including a crane, logging truck, and container truck. Mr Fulford said all the toys were tested on his son, Brent, — “he is our best critic” - family and friends. Mr Fulford was keen to ensure that the toys were safe for the rigours of the playground. They are made from pine and chipboard, with a polyurethane finish to make them safe to chew. The toys are not on sale, but Mr Fulford and his wife want a manufacturer to make a batch to test the market, and if successful they would go into business. Mr Fulford’s award was one of 11 presented last evening by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, to Wellington companies. Other products included swimming-pool fencing, lawnmowers, wetsuits, and dentists’ equipment.
