Inflation 10 p.c. — Labour
PA Wellington Inflation is running about 10 per cent, says Labour’s finance spokesman, Mr R. 0. Douglas. A “simple calculation” revealed that the average price increase on the Trade and Industry Department summary of price notifications was 10 per cent, said Mr Douglas yesterday. “Admittedly this is rough and ready, but I am sure that this is a far more accurate estimate of the current rate of inflation than the latest consumers price index measure, which was taken only two weeks before the freeze ended,” he said. “Increases in the price of items such as timber, roofing, and carpet underlay are rapidly going to feed through into the cost of new housing. “The Trade and Industry Department is also becoming progressively overloaded with work,” he said.
