MG Metro top seller in March
The Austin/MG Metro was Britain’s top-selling car in March. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the Metro, of which 17,129 were registered, bounced to the top to displace the Vauxhall Cavalier, which had been No. 1 for February. The Cavalier dropped to third in the pecking order, while Ford’s Escort remained in second place. Ford’s Fiesta and Sierra models were fourth and fifth respectively. Australia’s 1983 top car list has just been released and it shows that the six and eight-cylinder Ford Falcons and Fairmonts and Holden Commodores remain the cars most in demand.
Ford Falcons and Fairmonts took the lion’s share with 61,549 registrations, leaving the Holden Commodore a long way back in second place with 35,295 registrations. The Holden Camira, the New Zealand demand for which has yet to come up to early expectations, was third best seller in Australia, 33,191 units being registered. Next in line were the Nissan Bluebird (26,904), Mitsubishi Sigma (26,109) and Ford Laser (24,910). Britain’s top sellers in 1983 were the 'Ford Escort (174,190), Ford Sierra (159,119), Austin/MG Metro (137,303), Vauxhall Cavalier (127,509), Ford Fiesta (119,602) and Austin/MG Maestro (65,328).
