Obituary Dr R. G. Simmers

PA Wellington One of the first two New Zealanders to visit Antarctica on an official New Zealand expedition, Dr Ritchie Gibson Simmers, has died in Wellington. Dr Simmers had been involved in Antarctic affairs for more than 50 years and was chairman of the Ross

Dependency Research Committee for seven years before his retirement in 1965. He was one of two New Zealanders on the 1929-31 British, Australian, and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition led by Douglas Mawson. That was NewZealand’s first official involvement in Antarctica.
