Hint has youthful talent to win Riccarton feature

By

J. J. BOYLE

Hint’s prowess as a metric miler will make her a formidable three-year-old rival for her elders in the Lion Brown Handicap, the T.A.B. trifecta race and the first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

Hint was just edged out over 2000 m in the Warstep Stakes on the first day of the meeting, but assembled a sequence of three victories in 1600 m events earlier in the Southern Wrightson Series for three- year-old fillies. Her 1:35.1 in winning the Oamaru Jockey Club’s Waitaki Stakes in March was one of the outstanding runs of the series, and in her next appearance she won the North Canterbury club’s Inglewood Stakes by three and a half lengths in 1:36.1.

Race 7 2.55 T.A.B. TRIFECTA T.A.B. DOUBLE T.A.B. QUINELLA LION BROWN HANDICAP $22,000; 1600 m 1 3106 Clansman 17 57.0 Last-start 6th was in stronger field at this distance at Trentham. Win three starts back was in Otago Racing Club’s D. B. Galaxy. A. Robinson 2 0182 Super Dude 2 56.5 Southern form has been solid. Ran Sukerbelle to a nose at this distance at Riverton on Monday. J. Collett. 3 2137 Atrapar 13 55.5 Was expensive failure in Great Easter on Monday. Not the worst on earlier North Island form, although 1400 m is probably his best distance. 4 1304 Queen’s Pal 7 55.5 Programme this year has been restricted because of firm tracks. Will come right back into favour if the footing eases. R. McAra. 5 5151 Upper Cut 16 54.5 Impressive for the power of his finish in winning 1400 m Great Easter Handicap. Has also won at 1600 m, and must be respected in his present form. B. Smith 6 1846 Dreamville 11 53.0 Did not show enough in Great Easter to come into the boom for this, but easier footing would help his cause. 7 7163 Gaelic Bid 6 53.0 Last-start placed run was over 2000 m at Westport in February. This harder. T. Matthews. 8 0021 Handsome Heir 8 52.5 Back to 1600 m after winning over 2080 m at Rangiora last week. Might lack the sharp speed necessary for this. G. Davison. 9 1112 Hint 4 52.0 Only nosed out at 2000 m in Warstep Stakes on Monday, but three wins beforehand were at 1600 m. Respected. J. Hawes 10 8541 Machiavelli 9 52.0 Won in style this distance against lower-graded horses on Monday. R. McCann 11 0057 Noble Jewel 1 52.0 Made late run from well down the field in 2000 m feature on Monday. Hard to see him measuring up over shorter trip. 12 2472 General Fripon 14 51.0 Newcomer at meeting. Last-start second was in class 21609 m event Hastings, April 7. G. Phillips 13 3765 In the Glen 5 51.0 Distance should suit, but would still have to show substantial improvement on Great Easter run. J. Oakeshott 14 9028 Super Comet 15 51.0 Did not show enough in Great Easter to command respect for this. 15 6 Admiral Blair 10 50.0 Will probably get better opportunities over more ground later. S. Anderton 16 2363 McAngus 18 49.5 Strong finisher for 3rd in Great Easter, but was 3 lengths from winner, Upper Cut. G. Elliot 17 0111 Royal Sceptre 12 49.5 Newcomer to this class. Win last time out was over 1400 m on Wednesday. 18 4784 North Range 3 49.0 Distant 4th 2000 m in weaker company on Wednesday. P. Atkinson.

1 54.0 Found Miles Better too good over 2000 m on Monday, but this is well within his reach. Could be still improving with recent racing. C. Johnson 2 0260 Noble Boa 2 54.0 Did not show much against Miles Better and company in the 3ZB Classic on Monday. Fair run at North Canterbury the time before. L. Didham 3 0626 Four Crowns 6 53.0 North Island veteran still capable of sound runs over a bit of ground. Placed runs this season include second in Manawatu Cup and third in 2400 m Terrace Regency Handicap at Trentham. 4 1135 Top Blend 3 53.0 Faded close to home after being responsible for strong pace in 2000 m feature race on Monday. J. Oakeshott. 5 1389 Julie’s Boy 10 52.5 Will struggle at this level. G. Davison 6 5408 Shazaam 11 52.5 Has to find some improvement on first-day run to test the best here. G. Phillips 7 3313 Kade 5 52.0 Powerful finisher over 2000 m on Monday. Obvious chance on that run. J. Collett 8 0046 Suttle Knight 4 52.0 Faded after getting the run of the race on first day. Form has been patchy, but one of his best runs would carry him into this finish. G. Elliot

9 1210 Native Satin 7 51.0 Showed nothing over 1600 m on first day. P. Richards 10 4850 Pamdora 8 51.0 Struggling to recapture her best earlier form. R. McCann 11 3957 Five Over Five 9 50.0 Win here would be outsize in surprises. M. Burnett

She will be one of two form runners for the Jim Tomkinson stable in tomorrow’s $22,000 race and she will be partnered by the stable rider, Judy Hawes, who won the Great Easter Handicap on Wednesday on Upper Cut. Having also won at 1600 m, Upper Cut also has a lot going for him tomorrow. He has 54.5 kg and will carry 2.5 kg more than Hint from a less advantageous barrier position, but a repetition of the verve and dash he showed in running a track record for 1400 m on Wednesday could carry him into the finish. He will be ridden by Bruce Smith.

Clansman has the task of giving weight all round but his class and physique could make Mr Don Cameron’s four-year-old a formidable contender in this, his only start at the meeting.

Atrapar, the beaten favourite in the Great Easter, and the Busuttin-trained General Fripon, have done enough on North Island courses to assure them of strong Central Districts backing, but they will have to come up with brilliant gallops to upset the pattern of southern victories in major handicap races at the meeting. Queen’s Pal will take a sharp rise up the list of fancies if the ground eases, and Super Dude, another newcomer at the meeting, will have to produce his best run yet to win from his position so close to the top of the handicap. Jim Collett, who will ride Super Dude, might have brighter prospects of landing a winner when he partners Kade in the Qantas Stakes, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Kade finished at a great rate for third behind Miles Better and Charles Beaufort over 2000 m in the 3ZB Classic on Monday and might be about to make his most important contribution yet to the record of a distinguished family. Kade is a six-year-old by the chamnion stallion Noble Bijou, and is a close relation of Princess Mellay and, of course, her famous son, Prince Majestic. Charles Beaufort, which beat Kade by a head for second on Monday, will meet the Wingatui stayer on the same terms tomorrow, and if, as can be argued, that race found him still at the improving stage, another chapter could be added to the Dave Kerr stable’s success record for the season.

Four Crowns, Shazaam, and Suttle Knight will carry the flag for the North Island, but the best of the South Islanders could cope with them, to judge from the latest form.
