Labour stages rural seminar

A seminar for farming people and others in rural districts has been organised by the Rangiora Labour Party Electorate Committee for Saturday, May 5. The aim of the seminar is to acquaint the rural community with Labour’s thinking on rural matters and also to enable information and opinion to go in the other direction, according to the Rangiora Labour candidate, Mr Brian Tomlinson. The seminar is intended for all of rural Canterbury, not just the Rangiora electorate. “The Labour Party believes that the future of New Zealand lies in adding value to our agricultural and forest products,” said Mr Tomlinson. “It is very important, therefore, that the Labour Party listens closely to the views of rural and smalltown people.” Among the featured speakers will be former Minister of Agriculture, Mr

Colin Moyle, who will speak on Labour’s view of the future for pastoral farming. It is expected that Mr Moyle will be releasing some Labour policy for the General Election at this time.

Professor Moran from the University of Auckland will speak on diversification and regional development in Canterbury and Dr D. Jackson of Lincoln College will deal with horticultural potential. Mr Kerry Burke, M.P. for West Coast, will be speaking on forestry and Mrs Margaret Shields, M.P. for Kapiti, will address the topic, “Women in the rural community.” The full-day seminar will be held at the Chervier Centre, Victoria Street, Rangiora and enquiries can be made by writing to the Seminar Organiser, P.O.
