Treasure Island

“Treasure Island” has been chosen as the May production for Canterbury Children’s Theatre.

Although this is not the first time that the play has been done by the group it is the first time the musical version has been produced in New Zealand. Canterbury Children’s Theatre have held the exclusive rights to this version for some time but have not done it as the play was produced some six years ago. The musical version was first produced at the Mermaid Theatre in London with Sir Bernard Miles as Long John Silver. For Canterbury Children’s Theatre the well-known actor, Mervyn Glue, will play this part. As the cabin boy Jim Hawkins two young actors, Christopher Compton and Simon Jones, will alternate.

The musical follows the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson and has all

the characters with the added interest for younger theatre-goers of some rollicking music. Production is by Penny Giddens who helped also with the scenery. George Williams is the choreographer and Malcolm Jones the musical director. Costumes have been designed by Elizabeth Davis and makeup will be by Margaret Roberts.

Others in the cast include Peter Brown, Murray Richards, Alan Collins, Pen Manning, Barrie Cheyne, Glen Taitoko, Grant Moulin, Andrew Riach and others. “Treasure Island” will open in the Repertory Theatre on May 5 until May 19. Saturday performances will be at 2 p.m. and weekday performances at 7 p.m.
