Flag ceremonies
Sir, — A solution to the ongoing discussion, albeit one-sided, about flag flying in schools has come to mind. Mr Wellington has made a patriotic suggestion. By adopting it schools will be able to express publicly their views on the Minister’s education policies. Schools should fly flags at half-mast. This will mark the passing of “GY” classification film viewing in school time and the lack of jobs for qualified teachers, and remind us all of the Government’s attitude to improving education — halfhearted. By adopting my suggestion, all groups can be happy. Unemployed teachers could be employed on a roster system to raise and lower flags. This will provide jobs and improve the teacher/pupil ratio. — Yours, etc.,
JEFF MAY. April 18, 1984.
