Church lack inspiration
THE CHURCH “Remote Luxury.” “It’s never as good as I hoped, or as bad as I feared,” say the Church on “Into My Hands.” That pretty well sums up this four-song EP — their sound has been drawn from inspired sources such as the Byrds, but so far their recordings have been uninspired, and “Remote Luxury” is no exception. Although the jangly guitar and velvet-smooth Steven Kilbey vocals, that sounded so fresh on the first Church record, “The Unguarded Moment,” retain their appeal, there is a lack of vitality here that unfortunately is becoming a
trade mark of the band.
The opening track “Maybe These Boys” starts the record promisingly with an odd mix of the riff from “Waterfront,” some very serious keyboards, and an unusually light-hearted vocal, but the remaining tracks such as “Into My Hands” sound as earnest as previous recordings have indicated.
“Remote Luxury” seems a safe release from a band with proven songwriting talent but little apparent spark. The next LP will need to see some chances taken.
