Nuclear waste for Gobi Desert?
NZPA-Reuter Vienna China is considering proposals for European nuclear waste to be stored in the Gobi Desert.
The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wu Xueqian, confirmed at a press conference during a visit to Austria that the proposal had been made, although he did not say' whether it was likely to be accepted. Asked whether it was true that China was considering the idea, he said: “This is a very sensitive subject and we take it very seriously. We shall study it with the greatest caution, taking into consideration all the technical problems involved.” Last February it was re-
ported that Nukem G.M.8.H., a West German fuel firm, had signed a letter of intent with China to store waste from Euro-
pean nuclear reactors. The director of Austria’s Zwentendorf nuclear power station also told reporters recently that Austria was approaching Peking with similar proposals. China last year joined the Vienna-based United Nations International Atomic Energy agency set up to foster peaceful nuclear development' and monitor the movement of civilian nuclear fuel. China has not discussed the European nuclear waste proposals with the agency.
