California quakes
NZPA-AP San Francisco An earthquake jarred a wide area of northern California yesterday, triggering a ?USI million ($1.52 million) fire, knocking houses from their foundations, and shaking San Francisco skyscrapers. The University of California’s seismographic station in Berkeley said that the earthquake had registered 6.2 on the Richter scale. It was centred on the Calaveras fault 20km east of San Jose and 80km south of San
Francisco. In Sacramento, the state’s capital, more than a dozen of California’s top earthquake experts had their biannual meeting interrupted by the earthquake. South-east of San Francisco about 50 prisoners at a jail that was damaged by the earthquake walked to freedom — with permission. Because of accommodation problems, those inmates with only a few days left on their sentences were released early.
