Burglars bungle job

Beer-drinking burglars bungled a job at a Christchurch hotel early on Tuesday morning, setting off a /ire alarm and then leaving their safe-cutting gear in their rush to flee.

Their problems started when they stuffed towels in the smoke detectors of the strongroom at the Canter-

bury Inn, in Mandeville Street. A fire alarm was accidentally knocked about 4.30 a.m., and minutes later about 100 guests were standing outside wondering where the fire was. Detectives arrived at the hotel after oxy-acetylene cutting gear and a portable radio telephone were found

in the strongroom. Empty cans of beer, which had been stolen from the bar, littered the scene. Cardboard had been taped over the strongroom windows and the safe was still warm from attempts to cut it open. Nothing was taken, apart from the beer. Detectives are still investigating.
