Nine swimming records

Americans nominated the first two days of the Arena international masters swimming championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Tuesday and yesterday. Nine world records have been set at the first two days of competition, and all but one has been set by an American. It has been a lengthy first two days for the competitors and officials. The 1100 competitors have ensured the success of the first world masters games both financially and competitively, but the sheer weight of numbers has meant extended sessions at the Q.E. II Park pool. Tuesday’s competition lasted 15 hours, except for a 20 minute break at lunchtime for the official opening. Yesterday the competition lasted 10 hours, on a shortened day, until early this morning. As expected, one of the outstanding competitors at the championships has been the American woman, Sandy Neilson. The winner of the gold medal in the 100 m freestyle at the Munich Olympics in 1972, Neilson displayed the same easy, fluid style to win the 50 and 400 m freestyle, and she showed her versatility yesterday to win the 200 m medley in a world record time. Competing in the youngest age-group, the 25 to 29 years, Neilson swam 2min 32.91 s in the medley. That was 2.64 s inside the old time. Al Kallunki, from the Waikiki club in Hawaii, is one of the oldest competitors at the championships, but he has already broken two world records. On Tuesday in the 50m breaststroke (80 to 84 years) he clipped 2.53 s of the old world mark. His new time was 55.06 s — better than people 40 years his junior could record. Yesterday he broke the 200 m medley record by nearly five seconds. He swam 4min 43.29 s which

was 4.89 s better than the old mark. T. Garton of the United States reduced the men’s 40 to 44 years 200 m medley time by just o.lBs yesterday to 2min 23.605. Dorothy Le Chasse (United States) took a good chunk off the 60 to 64 years 200 m backstroke world record on Tuesday. Her time, 3min 36.395, was 4.62 s better than the old time. J. McCollister (United States) took 7.97 s off the women’s 65 to 69 years 400 m freestyle world record. Her time was 7min 11.845.
