C.F.M. staff win wage rise

Cafetaria workers at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s Canterbury works have won a wage increase of 32c an hour, and the increase is not in breach of the wage freeze.

The increase, which brings the hourly rate to $4.64, is backdated to November 1 last year, in accordance with a decision of a Christchurch conciliator, Mr Len Fortune. Mr Fortune heard the parties to the dispute at a hearing on April 16 and released his decision last week. Twelve cafetaria workers went on strike at the works on April 4 and returned to work on April 9 when it was agreed to put the dispute to a disputes committee hearing before Mr Fortune.

In his reserved decision Mr Fortune strongly recommended that when circumstances allowed the parties should negotiate a cafetaria industry agreement that would “more fairly state the workers’ situation.” Mr Fortune said that one could not ignore the underlying problem brought about by the inadequacy of the tearooms and restaurant employees’ award to cover workers employed in the freezing industry, where without exception special rates were struck to ensure fair benefits. Mr Fortune ruled that under the terms of the tearooms and restaurant employees’ award the employees at C.F.M. should be paid the rate provided for a second cook in the sevenhanded kitchen, the rate, being 463.25 c. The works manager, Mr G. W. Rowe, said on Tuesday that the company accepted the decision.
