Dog chained in tidal creek

PA Auckland A German shepherd dog was chained to a tree in a Manukau Harbour creek for six to eight tides before being rescued by the S.P.C.A., but it died 30 minutes later at a veterinary clinic. The veterinarian said it had water and sand in its lungs. The chief inspector of the S.P.C.A., Mr Howard Andrews, said that the dog had suffered the tides for three or four days.

The bark around the tree had been clawed bare by the desperate dog. Mr Andrews said that the S.P.C.A. had received a call from a small boy who had been playing by the creek. Rescuers had had to crawl through bush and swamp to reach the dog, which was exhausted and unable to walk.

Mr Andrews said the society was investigating the case and two other cases of cruelty to animals during the Easter holidays.
