Pine impressive
PA Wellington Even in defeat the Central Districts’ prop, Chappie Pine, caught the eye yesterday in a national interdistricts rugby league clash against Auckland, at Wellington yesterday. Pine, formerly of Wellington and now living in Taranaki, was one of the most damaging attackers in a lively, interesting encounter. His work rate on defence was similarly impressive and he was at the heart of Central’s splendid fourthquarter effort, which floundered only through lack of finish and experience.
Pine’s effort was not er-ror-free but as a watching New Zealand team coach. Graham Lowe, said later: “Only players who don't try anything don’t make mistakes.” For Lowe the rugged Pine stood out like a gem, and it is fair to assume that on his present form he will be close to a place in the special Kiwi trial on June 30, in Auckland. Scorers.— Auckland: Ricky Cowan, Joe Ropati, Clayton Friend, Ron O’Reagan tries; O'Reagan two penalties. Central Districts: Gary Campbell four penalties.
