'Press’ Cup points
Belfast’s fine display of attacking rugby against Suburbs in the senior competition yesterday brought in maximum points for constructive play in “The Press” Centennial Cup contest.
The Belfast side was also awarded 12 points out of 12 for sportsmanship and with a total score of 20 has 38 points out of 40 after two, rounds. At the other end of the scale four teams, Marist, Albion, Lincoln College, and Linwood, performed especially ineptly and could man-
age only two points out of eight for constructive play. The match between High School Old Boys and Lyttelton was marked by the fact that only 14 penalties were awarded by the referee, Mr G. J. Braithwaite. Sydenham had the lowest score for sportsmanship of five after two players were sin-binned. The points awarded for yes-, terday’s games were:— Belfast 12, 8, 20; Suburbs 10, 6, 16; Shirley 10, 6, 16; Meri-vale-Papanui 11, 5, 16; High School Old Boys 10, 6, 16; Lyttelton 11, 5,16; Burnside 9,
5, 14; Christchurch 8,5, 13; New Brighton 7,6, 13; University 7,6, 13; Lincoln College 11, 2, 13; Linwood 11, 2, 13; Hornby 7,5, 12; Sydenham 5, 4,9; Marist 6,2, 8; Albion 6,2, 8. The total points are:— Suburbs 46, Lyttelton 41, Linwood 41, Albipn 40, Belfast 38, Shirley 34, Burnside 30, Lincoln College 30, High School Old Boys 28, MerivalePapanui 28, New Brighton 28, University 28, Christchurch 27, Hornby 27, Marist 27, Sydenham 24. The first four teams named have all played a round of night rugby.
