Tug Lyttelton for survey

The historic steamer Tug Lyttelton will be fitted with a new permanent awning on its aft deck while it is laid up during the winter months. After a cruise for Tug Lyttelton Perservation Society members this week-end, work will begin on the tug’s annual survey and maintenance. It will be done voluntarily by members and is expected to take about seven months. The tug has been kept busy during the summer carrying up to 1500 people on week-end cruises and charter trips. The tug also proved popular during its eight-day stay in Akaroa early in January, said the society’s president, Mr Malcolm Browne, with 1500 people taking harbour cruises.

The society planned to make the Akaroa visit an annual event, he said. Two permanent racing marks installed at Camp Bay and Port Levy have proved popular with local yachties. The marks were installed by the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club with the permission of the Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour. The club’s commodore, Mr Alan Archer, said the racing marks had enabled the club to design a greater variety of courses and had saved a lot of trouble in placing temporary marks which had been done in the past. Mr Archer said the club had had a successful racing season. A twilight series, which had

been run for the first time this year, had been well supported. The series was run in conjunction with the Canterbury trailer yacht squadron. The club plans to hold a series of four winter races with the first being held next month. ARRIVALS Tuesday Tropic Dawn (6 a.m.), 4164, Dubai (Scales).
