Painter dies
The painter. Marcel Janco. one of the founders of Western Europe’s Dada movement, has died in Tel Aviv. He was 89. Janco. born in Rumania, studied architecture and during World War I went to Zurich where Dadaism was taking shape under the leadership of Tristan Tzara and Hans Arp. He went to live in what is now Israel during World War 11. Dadaism, a precursor of surrealism, outraged and scandalised the artistic establishment of the time. Janco was best-known for his abstract masks recalling Japanese and Greek theatre. — Tel Aviv.
