Education policy
Sir,—J. Canham (April 19) perspicaciously divines my poor opinion of the present Minister of Education and, by his rebuttal, largely makes my case for me. But he correctly reminds me that Mr Wellington has other sterling qualities, newly prominent among these, apparently, being his readiness to defend “Christian values” via the education system from the corrupting onslaught of “subversive, humanistic indoctrination.” Well, we might disagree as to terms; but there can be no doubt that the Minister is doing his best to ensure that our children .are uncontaminated by knowledge. While this might qualify him for some brands of religious patriarchy, it is not the sort of quality that any thinking parent should seek in a Minister of Education. — Yours, etc., D. J. BAILEY. April 19, 1984.
