Great east in war movie
The epic war movie, “The Battle of Britain” (1969), screening on One tomorrow night, has a star-studded cast including Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Michael Redgrave, Curt Jergens, Susannah York, Christopher Plummer, lan McShane, Ralph Richardson and Kenneth More.
During a 16-week period in the summer of 1940, the first and last complete war in the airwas fought over England. After Dunkirk, Hitler was in control of the entire European continent. England stood alone, badly bruised but as yet unconquered. Under the command of Herman Goering, a savage
attack was launched. The British defence, under Chief Marshal Sir High Dowding, was outnumbered by more than four to one — and they were desperately short of pilots. The Germans made one critical mistake: an offcourse bomber dropped its deadly cargo on a British
city. The British retaliated by bombing Berlin. To save face, Goering ordered further attacks on London. This left the English airfields untouched, and time and time again waves of brave young British pilots took to the air to shoot down the slower moving German bombers.
