Parking meters shot-up

NZPA-AP Anchorage

Someone armed with a gun has been sending Anchorage parking meters to the big expired zone in the sky, and the authorities are not pleased. “This guy’s got to be nailed,” said Mr James McLain, a municipal parking meter maintenance foreman. “Bullets are going all over the place.” Nine days ago, meter maids came across the remains of two meters, their expired tags blown to smithereens by either a .22-

calibre or a ,38-calibre bullet.

Late last week, an assailant shot up three more meters. So-far, the damage has cost $4OO.

“It (the bullet) goes right through the plastic dome,” Mr McLain said. “It’s hurting the flag, but it’s not hurting the mechanism.” The meter shootings are the first in 15 years and Mr McLain is worried about the possibility of a stray shot. “I’m appalled, because whoever is doing this is going to hurt somebody,” he said. “It’s nutty."
