Air N.Z. to talk to demoted crew
PA Auckland Air New Zealand’s chief executive, Mr Norman Geary, has agreed to meet four cabin crew demoted after complaining of fatigue in Los Angeles two weeks ago.
The four received telegrams at the week-end advising that Mr Geary would discuss the matter with them on Friday morning.
The president of the Stewards and Hostesses’ Union, Mr Peter Best, said yesterday he had called a meeting for Friday afternoon.
The demoted stewards are a chief purser, Mr Bob Page, who has been in
charge of Royal flights, and a senior purser, Mr Les Brass, who has for years been active in organising the airline’s crippled children’s flights.
The other two are stewardesses, Mrs Jenny Korman and Miss Jane Andrews.
All have been stripped of rank, taken off international services and placed on the domestic roster. The move would mean the loss to each of thousands of dollars a year in wages. They refused to fly the Los Angeles-Honolulu sector of the controversial new London-Auckland roster, claiming they were too fa-
tigued. The union says the new roster gives insufficient rest time in Los Angeles for crews working the long Lon-don-Los Angeles sector. Last week, the captain and chief purser on the Los Angeles-Honolulu sector sent seven cabin crew to hospital when the aircraft arrived in Hawaii. Five were found to be suffering from fatigue and two with specific complaints. An airline spokesman said yesterday that all crews worked all sectors on the third disputed London service which arrived in Auckland at the week-end.
