Helicopter rescue aborted

A Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopter from Christchurch aborted a rescue flight to a peak in Arthur’s Pass National Park yesterday afternoon after a sick tramper was able to walk from the bush. The Iroquois helicopter was called after a middleaged man was reported to have collapsed with chest pains while tramping on Avalanche Peak, near Arthur’s Pass settlement. However, with the help of companions the man walked out to the settlement, arriving about dusk. The helicopter was told to turn back when it was over Cass, about 24km from Arthur’s Pass settlement. The sick tramper received medical treatment at the settlement.
