Maurice Burrowes began the 1984 table tennis season in the same manner he left off last winter, when he; scooped the open titles in the Easter tournament at, the Selwyn Street hall yesterday.
The tournament was played on a section system, with the group winners going into the play-offs for the finals. Burrowes went through the day unbeaten to win the singles, doubles and mixed-doubles crowns.
He beat the doughty Riccarton defender, Alan Alabaster, in the singles final; combined successfully with Barry Butler, of Timaru, to pick up the men’s doubles title in a lengthy contest against Lyndon White and. John Baxter, then teamed
up with the veteran, Thelma May, to share the mixed doubles title.
Sandra Mayes made sure her trip down from Nelson was worth while by winning the women’s singles event, beating the young Riccarton player, Monique van der Aa, in the final.
