Native forest policy
PA Nelson The Joint Campaign on Native Forests says the Labour Party’s environment policy lacks firm recommendations for the South Island. The policy was announced by Labour’s spokesman on the environment, Dr Michael Cullen, at Karamea on Sunday. The joint campaign’s director, Mr Guy Salmon, said yesterday that, “While we agree with its philoso-
phies, we are concerned that the policy contains specific proposals for the North Island and none for the South.” The policy contained nothing which committed the Labour Party to specific action on the West Coast. The lack of a commitment to a Punakiaki national park was particularly disappointing, Mr Salmon said. The steps suggested in the policy had already been taken, he said.
