Special correspondent Invercargill Ocean guard, a creditable runner-up to Paddle in the Riverton Cup on the first day, thoroughly deserves a winning turn in the Mooney Wools Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the third and final day of the Riverton Eastern carnival today. The ultra consistent Imperial Guard four-year-old has been runner-up at his last four starts. In the absence of his first day cup conquerer, Paddle, he is in line to win today, especially as Jim Collett felt the cup on the first day was not run entirely to suit him. Kintail Lad, third in the cup, looks the big danger for Ocean Guard. Kintail Lad has earlier finished first equal at Waimate over 2000 and obviously has potential as middle distance performer. He would need to reveal little improvement on his firsrt day cup third to win this. Gripp, another highly consistent sort, prejudiced his cup chance on the first day by hanging tendencies. For all that, he was a respectable enough fifth and strikes a slightly weaker field today. The Washdyke visitor, Soaring High, a sound fourth on the first day and a good third on the second day yesterday, is likely material for the Radio 4ZA Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. dnnhlo

Soaring High stepped out on the third day last year and won this 1400 m feature, it might not be beyond him to repeat, as he has the constitution to stand three races in quick time and keep improving. He will be ridden by Jim Collett, who won the Southern Champion Handicap on his stablemate, Proud Leigh, yesterday. Soaring High is likely to encounter most rivalry from Go Johnny, which created a favourable impression when he won the 1200 m United Building Society Handicap (1200 m on the first day. Go Johnny’s liking for Riverton footing will be a decided asset in his favour. A T.A.B. treble will be

run on races five, seven, and nine.

Proud Leigh won so impressively yesterday the he appeals as a ready made

anchor in the first leg (race five), the Lindsay and Dixon Handicap. He won too well to offer excuses for the beaten division and today’s field, if anything, is slightly weaker. Azirae, an impressive winner on the first day, will be a thorn in the side of his rivals in the middle leg, the Tweedie Memorial Steeples. The issue in the third leg, the Waipango Handicap, is nowhere near so clearcut, as Saturn, Red Rhapsody and Zeldeene by no means exhaust the list of possibilities. Shelleys Gold, the first day winner, Hiroshima Rose and Gay Girl, both improvers, are other worthy of some consideration. T.A.B.
