Grants for exotic flora not wanted

PA Wellington Government grants for the replacement of native bush by exotic forests should be removed, according to the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. The Society’s national conservation officer. Dr Gerald McSweeney. says that grants through the Rural Bank and the forestry encouragement grant scheme are leading to the destruction of native forest. The grants covered 45 per cent of all costs of developing exotic forests on native bushland and swamps, he

said. "The Government is doing its best to preserve native forests and other Government departments are giving encouragement to destroy them," Dr McSweeney said. The society had been asking political parties about their forestry policies and lobbying MPs “Things look encouraging but no party has committed itself," Dr McSweeney said. The society has planned an election-year campaign to push for the abolition of the grants.
