Centenarian to celebrate
Mrs Mabel Franklin (above) will celebrate her hundredth birthday with a small family gathering at the St Nicholas Home for the Aged in Christchurch today.
Born and bred in London, Mrs Franklin immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 21. She and her husband, Maurice, whom she met on the ship coming over, settled in Christchurch in 1997. Mrs Franklin moved from her Papanui home to St Nicholas’s nine years ago.
Today she will be joined by her two sons and their wives, who live in Christchurch.
Mrs Franklin worked for some time in haberdashery before rearing her family of five children. She now has 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs Franklin was noted for her fine voice and sang for years with the Papanui Methodist Church choir. According to one son she still can carry a good tune.
