New Vicar of Hokitika

The Rev. David Rathgen, of Christchurch, has been appointed Vicar of Hokitika. Mr Rathgen, who is serving in the Hoon Hay parish, is expected to take up his position in October. The Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt Rev. Maurice Goodall, has announced that Mr Rathgen will also become the Rural Dean of Westland. Born and educated in Christchurch, Mr Rathgen completed most of his theological training in Christchurch and has served at Timaru, Linwood and Hoon Hay.

He has travelled extensively abroad and done Christian radio broadcasting work in Britain, and served as chaplain to Englishspeaking communities in France and Sudan. He returned to Christchurch in 1979 when he was appointed Vicar of Hoon Hay.

Mr Rathgen, aged 41, is married with two children.
