Crown land tax suggested
PA Dunedin A suggestion that recreational use of Crown land be taxed has been made to the Government, said the Minister of Lands, Mr Elworthy, in Oamaru last evening.
The proposal has been made by the Land Settlement Board to generate funds from the recreational use of all Crown land by commercial users, he said. “We are looking at the possibility of applying a revenue-generating system which will help us to. finance the facilities which we are expected to provide,” Mr Elworthy said. "Our objective is to channel resources into improving facilities and encouraging more people to use them.” The board will consult the Forest Service, and take public submissions, he said. No figures had been decided.
The proposal is part of a general review of the ad-
ministration of Crown land. Mr Elworthy denied a “New Zealand Times” report that as a result of the draft policy, all but two of New Zealand’s ski-fields would be taxed 5 per cent.
