Hamilton, Dickens win karting
Mike Dickens, of Palmerston North, and John Hamilton, of Christchurch, both took two titles at the New Zealand sprint kart championships which were held in Christchurch at the week-end.
Dickens’ double came in the lOOcc international and the open A class up to 150 cc. Drivers from Palmerston North and Auckland were particularly prominent in the latter class, many of them driving superior new 135 cc engines. Hamilton was successful in the 125 cc gearbox and open B class (up to 250 cc), and it was the third time he had won both classes. The most spectacular accident of the week-end was in the second heat of the lOOcc Yamaha event, which drew 44 entries. Two karts touched at 112km/h in the main straight and Michael Wallace (Dunedin) rolled, with other karts forced to take evasive action. The eventual winner, Murray
Davies, of Christchurch, was hit by a spinning kart and suffered bruising to his hip, but managed to continue. The racing was close, and Davies won only two of the five heats.
Shane Drake, of Christchurch, took two titles in the junior classes against top opposition from Palmerston North and Auckland, while Bruce Coulbeck, also of Christchurch, finished second over-all in the midget section. Coulbeck was disqualified in a heat in which an Aucklander, Glen Willcox, was forced off the track, but after the racing finished it was found that some motors * did not measure to specifications and Coulbeck was promoted from fifth to second.
